Hey All! I’m tagging you in this note because you expressed interest in the “30-day Sugar Challenge.” If you have changed your mind, or if I misread your interest, just let me know and I’ll happily remove you from the list! (Or, if you’ve decided to join us on the challenge, let me know that, too.)
I’m really excited so many have decided to do this! For me, it’s a way to gain awareness around how much sugar I actually eat. I love digging into some sweet treats when I’m stressed out, so this will allow me to find something better to do in those instances. I can’t wait to see how I feel at the end of the 30 days. Weight loss will be an added bonus for me.
Details, details, details:
Time period: Monday 1/11/10 through Tuesday 2/10/10 (if I’m counting right…)
Say NO to:
- added sugars (anything w/ sugar listed as an ingredient)
- “sugar” includes: maple syrup, honey, agave, rice syrup, brown sugar, organic sugar, turbinado, etc.
- alcohol of any kind (beer, wine, cocktails)
What’s okay to eat:
- pasta, grains, fruit, dried fruit (check the label to make sure there isn’t added sugar)
Motivators:
I think it’s important that we each put something at stake here to keep us going. For me, I’m throwing money into a pot at my gym. At the end of 30 days, whoever hasn’t had sugar will split the pot. (Money motivates me. What can I say?) I encourage you to find something that motivates you – a way to reward yourself at the end of the challenge (massage, new outfit, a beer!) – to keep you going when you’re feeling tempted.
Once you’ve decided what you’ll put at stake, post it as a comment here. (I believe it helps us to be accountable when we put things in writing and when we put it out to other people.)
I’ll post thoughts, ideas, ugly facts about sugar and my own challenges along the way. Feel free to do the same.
To our health!

Do they have interventions for sugar addiction? I am having guilt...
ReplyDeleteDay one came around...January 11 and I totally disregarded the group. I used a sugar packet in my coffee (ok 2), I ate a piece of chocolate for my mid-morning snack and my co-worker brought in homemade chocolate chip cookies, which I oculdn't turn down (right?). All the while, I pictured Jennifer's face in my mind. The disappointment!
I have a problem. I hear that's the first step ...admitting it. This might finally be my rock bottom. While your awareness of sugar consumption has been raised by NOT having it, mine has been raised by watching you all succeed while I guility grab for another cookie.
I have already bombed again today. Two more sugar packets and three rolls of Smarties (did I mention it's 9:19 am?).
Tomorrow will be my start date. January 15th. Only 4 days behind, but miles behind you all! Thanks for the inspiration. Here we go!
Brooke - Wow, girl! What honesty. Just know that you CAN do it. It's not easy, but remember how you'll feel at the end of the challenge without sugar having that kind of hold on you. (focus on the VISION!) Seriously, buy some fruit, some dried fruit (mango is really yummy - nice and naturally sweet - Trader Joe's has it w/o sugar added) and just forget about sugar itself. Let me know what you need.
ReplyDeleteBrooke: Like Jen., thx for your honesty. Today (15th) is your start date. Make a firm decision (just say "no") and stick to it. oranges are awesome. Sugar free cookies (Murray) at most stores are GREAT. Also I just got Smuckers natural peanut butter at WalMart...no sugar added and after the first bite, I actually like it. To all: Produce some "I am" statements for your life. I am living well and enjoying a healthy diet w/o blatent sugars, e.g. Your subconscious mind does not know the difference between what is real and imagined and you will become what you thinkith. Do it...
