Help! I'm trapped in a sugar factory and can't get out!

Just kidding. I've just been MIA. I'm sure you've all been worried about me - envisioning me keeled over next to a giant dune of powdery white stuff (I'm talking about SUGAR here! Geez.). Day 10 and I still haven't cracked.

Last night, we had some friends over for dinner. I made appetizers, salad, entree -the whole shebang - but for dessert... well, I didn't make dessert. I served oranges. Too bad for anyone expecting some fabulous sweet treat. That's right - I.Served.Oranges. One of our friends brought some petit-fours from the Fancy Food Show. I asked her to take what was left of them home with her. They were tempting me with their bright, sugary, shiny-ness catching my eye. So, I had to send them far away.

I just find that I resist over and over again. Today, I was offered some yummy smelling cookies. (Why do I torture myself by smelling the cookies anyway?) When I declined, I was told that organic cane juice was the fourth ingredient. There was hardly any sugar in them! Still, no, thank you.

I'm finding that naturally sweet things are tasting really sweet to me these days. Butternut squash, Larabars... all taste really sweet. Hmmm.... I'm hoping that I won't be able to stomach cookies once the 30 days is up.

Did you realize that we're on Day 10! 1/3 of the way there!

How are all of you doing? I'd love to know who's still at it. Keep telling that sugar to "F OFF!" :)

  1. I'm past my grumpy phase and in a good place right now. I've rediscovered fruit! I had the most delicious grapefruit yesterday, but my new fix is blueberries. I buy them fresh and warm them in a pan until they get syrupy. No sugar needed. Just grab a spoon...delicious! I made a loaf of banana bread too and just left the sugar out of it. The bananas are plenty sweet (I added a cup of blueberries too). I can walk by the cookies in the office kitchen (that I used to eat daily...2 or 3 of them). They don't even sound good to me today!

  2. So unlike most of you, (based on the posts I've read), my nemesis is definitely the wine. I have almost no strong resistance to skipping dessert or sugary snacks, or to leaving sweeteners out of oatmeal and coffee. Yes, my gaze has lingered over the pastry counter at my local coffee shop, but nothing painful.

I really agree with Jen that the more time goes by, naturally sweet things seem more and more satisfying. I replaced jelly with unsweetened applesauce and cinnamon on a PB&J the other day - it was great!

Also, I've found that limiting - and being attentive to sugar intake is really helping my resolve on the wine front. I've been 100% faithful to my challenge so far! YEA! I've really come to feel that the practice of a sensible restraint in one area (sugar) is having an unexpected result of helping cultivate good patterns in other areas. Its been a great experience so far.

I'm going to admit here that I have modified the rule on "hidden sugar" for my own challenge. For me, it felt like too little benefit for a lot of logistical trouble come eating times. So the adjustment I've made is that I check all the labels, and I don't eat anything with significant added sugars - e.g., JiF peanut butter, most salad dressings & many condiments, most "nutrition" bars, most boxed cereals, some breads, etc. All that stuff is OUT. However, I've decided not deprive myself of things like whole wheat bread & crackers, which contain very little added sugar and really aren't "sweet."

With this adjustment, I think the sugar challenge could become a sustainable change - of course, with a few sweets and glasses of wine thrown in each week after Feb. 10 !! ;)

    Great job everyone!!

  3. Yippee! I'm so glad to get your posts and to know how well you're doing. I love your ideas, too - the blueberries sound delicious and applesauce instead of jelly on the PB&J is a great idea. I meant to post this, but Trader Joe's has dried bananas (I think they're called "just bananas, flattened."). They have no sugar - hence the name - and they remind me so much of banana bread. They're another good substitute. Dried mango is almost too sweet for me these days.

We'll have to have a "virtual" celebration at the end of the 30 days! :) Or we could just meet in Mexico for margaritas?
